Getting Started

How do I export my TypePad blog?

Go to your TypePad blog → Settings → Export → Download the .txt export file.

What file format do I need?

Upload the .txt file from TypePad (not .xml or other formats). Maximum file size is 50MB.

Do I need to sign up?

Yes, create a free account to track your migrations and download results.

Migration Process

What gets migrated?

All blog posts, comments, images, PDFs, and file attachments. URLs and structure are preserved.

How long does it take?

Most blogs complete in 5-15 minutes. Large blogs with many assets may take longer.

Can I track progress?

Yes, you'll see real-time progress updates showing which assets are being downloaded.

Troubleshooting

Some assets failed to download

Some assets may no longer exist on TypePad servers or may be temporarily unavailable. Most migrations complete successfully with 95%+ of assets downloaded.

Migration appears stuck

Wait 10 minutes, then refresh the page. If still stuck, try uploading the file again.

Upload errors

Make sure you're uploading the correct .txt file from TypePad. Check file size is under 50MB.

Are PDFs and other files downloaded?

Yes! We download all file types including PDFs, documents, and any other files hosted on TypePad that are linked in your posts.

After Migration

How do I import to WordPress?

Go to WordPress Admin → Tools → Import → WordPress. Upload the WXR file we provide. This works with both WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress installations.

Does this work with self-hosted WordPress?

Yes! The WordPress export file (WXR) we generate is a standard format that works with any WordPress installation, not just WordPress.com. You can import it to WordPress.org sites, managed WordPress hosting, or any WordPress setup.

Can I import to other blogging platforms?

Many blogging platforms accept WordPress WXR files, including Ghost, Medium, Blogger, and others. Check if your target platform has a WordPress import option - if it does, our export file will likely work.

What about SEO and URLs?

URL structures are preserved in the export. Important: If your blog uses a typepad.com subdomain (like yourblog.typepad.com), you won't be able to set up redirects since TypePad servers are shutting down. Only blogs with custom domains can set up 301 redirects. Consider notifying your readers of the new location before TypePad closes.

How long are files stored?

Free users: Download your files immediately - temporary storage only
Individual plan: 3 months secure cloud hosting for your images (Amazon S3)
Pro plan: 6 months secure cloud hosting for your images (Amazon S3)
All users get immediate access to WordPress export files and ZIP downloads.
